Sanctuario de Chimayo - an Easter Pilgrimage

Each year Easter is marked by an annual pilgrimage for thousands of New Mexicans to the Sanctuario de Chimayo.

This chapel, nestled in the hills 28 miles north of Santa Fe, is the destination for people walking for days, in thanks, in penance, in quest of healing.

Here are some photos from a recent visit. Not the usual view of the Sanctuario de Chimayo. Here are some shots of the surrounding grounds.

Local lore is depicted in the scene below. Don Bernardo Abeyta is giving thanks to the Virgin, for the cross found in the ground, signifying the sanctity of the spot. Though the local church tried to relocate this cross several times, each time it would mysteriously return to this spot.

Ultimately, a chapel was built here to mark the spot.
